Sidney-based CHAMP Private Equity, one of Australia’s leading private equity firms, has made a major strategic investment in Pepperstone, a Melbourne-based global forex and CFD broker.

Pepperstone was founded in 2010 by Owen Kerr and Joe Davenport and since then has grown into one of the top 10 FX brokers globally.

The founders have partnered with CHAMP to facilitate further rapid growth on a global scale. Pepperstone has plans to open offices in multiple new regions this year. In order to further boost their brand, the firm is also said to be considering acquiring market leaders in certain key regions or looking at unique technology providers that may be complementary to the firm’s current offering.

Pepperstone Group is an execution-only forex and CFD broker that provides trading solutions sophisticated enough for veteran traders, yet simple enough for the forex novice.

Pepperstone currently offers platforms for both retail and institutional clients, transacting over USD $100 billion in FX turnover each month and with offices in Melbourne, Shanghai and Dallas.

“For Pepperstone to have the backing of one of Australia’s leading private equity firms as a significant investor and business partner is extremely exciting for us,” said Pepperstone CEO, Owen Kerr. “We plan to continue taking the business to a much higher level in the years ahead and are excited for what the future holds for Pepperstone and ultimately, our clients. Our focus has always been on providing our clients a far superior trading experience than what is in the market today, whether that be our lower spreads, best in class execution or customer experience. We feel this investment will exponentially assist in achieving our goal of becoming the world’s number 1 FX Broker.”

“We are excited to be making this strategic investment and to partner with Pepperstone,” commented Fiona Lock, a director of CHAMP Private Equity. “We are looking forward to helping the company build on its impressive recent growth and achieve its full potential.”

While the price is unknown, some believe the money paid by Champ may be between $100m and $200m, said the Australian Business Review.

Since 2010, Pepperstone has spearheaded the evolution of online forex trading in over 65 countries, helping this asset-class to become more accessible to the individual retail investor. “We aimed when we began to revolutionise the industry by offering traders better service, lower spreads and faster execution, something we are still absolutely committed to doing today. Our vision is to become the world’s largest provider of online foreign exchange trading,” says the firm.

CHAMP has one of the most successful private equity track records in Australasia, with a history of principal investment dating back to 1987. Its core focus is on the Australian and New Zealand markets, but with an international reach extending into Asia and North America. The firm’s track record of success is both in terms of its investment partners and its management partners. The firm’s investors are institutions from around the world, many of whom are now multi fund investors with the group. CHAMP has delivered top quartile results over its historical track record since 1987. The firm invests across a broad range of sectors, including media, transport, industrial services, education, retail, agribusiness, health and financial services.

The CHAMP group has offices in Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, and affiliated offices in Singapore and New York, giving it an unrivalled reach amongst Australian based peers. The firm’s executives have played leading roles in the formation and development of industry standards through the Australian Venture Capital Association, where Joe Skrzynski and Bill Ferris have served as Presidents, and Barry Zuckerman and Su-Ming Wong have been actively involved in the Council and its committees. Barry Zuckerman has chaired the AVCAL Reporting Guidelines Sub Committee and represents Australia on the International Private Equity Valuations Committee. CHAMP Founders, Bill Ferris and Joe Skrzynski, have been honored with the inaugural Life Achievement Awards by both the Australian and Asian industry associations.
